An internship/fieldwork experience is required of all CAD majors. You will be required to commit to working approximately 10 hours a week at your internship site throughout the semester, for a total of 120 hours. Along with the internship (CAD 601), you will be required to attend a weekly seminar (CAD 600). Students will need to register for CAD 600 and CAD 601 at the same time for a total of 4 units.
The internship and seminar are to be taken after you have completed 36
(thirty -six) units of the major plus completed the 6 (six) units
pre-requisite classes (min. total units completed before you can do CAD 600/601
is 42 units).
Before any student can register for CAD 600 and/or CAD 601 s/he must fill out a CAD Internship Application that is available online and submit it to the CAD Internship Coordinator via email or in person. Students must show proof of 36 units
in the major and 6 units of pre-requisites completed prior to internship placement. In addition, students must make an appointment to interview with the CAD Internship Coordinator to discuss the details of the survey after the application has been submitted.
Students who fail to do this will be unable to register for CAD 600 and CAD 601, only further delaying their expected date of graduation.
The following deadlines represent the last day on which students can file the appropriate paperwork. If these dates occur on a weekend, applications will be accepted until 5pm on the following Monday.

FAQs for Internship and Placement Process
Q: What happens if I miss the deadline for applying
for internship placement?
A. You must submit your application for the next semester.
There is no waiting list.
Q: Can I conduct my internship at the same site where I
currently work?
A: It is possible but not guaranteed. You must complete and submit a
petition: Petition – Internship Placement at Current Work Site and
receive approval from the Internship Placement Coordinator. (The form
is in the appendix of this manual.)
Q: Can I start my internship before the semester begins?
A: No. The University only insures you when you are a registered
student and when the semester is in session.
Q: Can I get paid for my internship?
A: Some agencies are able to pay interns, but it is up to you to
ask about that. The CAD Program does not get involved in this issue.
Sometimes agencies can pay for a conference registration or some other
“compensation” so be sure to ask.
Q: How is my internship different from the seminar?
A: The internship, CAD 601, is 120 hours of field placement at
your agency. The seminar, CAD 600, is designed for your professional
development while you are completing your internship hours. CAD 600 is
not a support session where you talk solely about your
internship, but rather, it contains substantive content about
organizational assessment, community analysis, and so on.
Q: Can I count my travel time to and from my internship site
as part of my 120 hours?
A:
No. Your 120 hours include only work conducted under the direction of a
designated agency supervisor. If you have obtained permission ahead of
time from your agency supervisor and your faculty supervisor, your 120
hours might include special training, attending a workshop, or a working
on a special project
