INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES ON CHILD & ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT/NURSING

CENTRAL AMERICA: NICARAGUA, HONDURAS, EL SALVADOR

DATES:  January 3 – 15, 2009 (approximate)

REGISTRATION MAXIMUM:  16 students (8 CAD; 8 Nursing)

http://www.wiredinternational.org) a non-profit organization affiliated with SFSU’s Marian Wright Edelman Institute and directed by SFSU professor Dr. Gary Selnow.  WiRED provides medical and healthcare information, education and communications in developing and war-affected regions, including Central America.  To learn more about what they do and what we are likely to encounter in Central America, please visit their website. 

 ESTIMATED FEES:

$1,600 – includes airfare to and from SFO to Managua, Nicaragua; lodging (double occupancy); ground transportation (passenger vans); in-country planning and coordination; translators and guides; gratuities; communication; customs fees.    Please note that airfare is subject to change until booked; rising gasoline prices may affect cost.

Method of payment::  Excluding airfare, all fees noted above must be paid with cashier’s check or money order only.  Students will pay for airfare separately and may use a credit card.  Air travel for the group will be arranged by CAD/Nursing . 

$400 – Covers 3 units of coursework plus $ $100 required University travel insurance.  These fees are required by SFSU whether or not students wish to receive academic  units.  This fee is paid to SFSU College of Extended Learning (check, cash, or credit card).

Food and beverages (estimated at $275) and personal expenses are NOT included in the above cost estimates.  Students are responsible for these expenses. 

ESTIMATED TOTAL:  $2,000 PLUS FOOD, BEVERAGES, AND PERSONAL EXPENSES; additional costs may be incurred for passport and required vaccinations.

Summer Research Experience Program (SREP) for Underrepresented Undergraduates Interested in Studying At-Risk Youth

The School of Social and Family Dynamics at Arizona State University is accepting applications for a summer program for underrepresented undergraduate students interested in gaining research experience for graduate school. Students participating in SREP 2008 will be mentored by a faculty member and a graduate student during an 8-week summer session. Applicants and faculty will be matched based on their research interests. SREP students will register for a 3-credit upper division seminar at ASU focused on professional development (e.g., applying to graduate school, taking the GRE, attending professional conferences), conduct a small research project based on the faculty mentor’s ongoing research, and prepare a poster for presentation of their research at the end of the 8-week session.

Accepted students will receive a financial package that includes:

§  Tuition for the 3-credit seminar

§  Roundtrip airfare to Tempe, AZ (for non-ASU students)

§  On-campus housing (for those needing housing)

§  A $1,500 stipend to cover meals, research, and miscellaneous expenses

Eligibility Requirements:

§  Sophomore or Junior standing during the Spring 2008
§  Be enrolled full-time in a 4-year college or university
§  Minimum of 3.0 Cumulative GPA
§  Demonstrate an interest in research with children, youth, and/or families (particularly those at-risk) and attending graduate school
§  Appropriate match with participating SSFD faculty
§  Be a member of a group that is underrepresented in graduate education in the social sciences such as racial and ethnic minorities, and first generation college students.
