As of October 2009, the Child & Adolescent Development Department will
not be accepting any change of major forms unless you are already in the
major (from one concentration to another concentration).
We are sorry to have to make this decision and hope things will improve.
Please do check back at the beginning of each semester to see if there
has been a change.
Also, please write your government representatives to tell them what
impact the budget cuts have made on your education and to your life.
Our reduction of services to you, the student, are a direct result of
these budget cuts. There have been various city and state
representatives saying that, in spite of media attention and protests,
they haven’t heard anything directly from SF State Students about budget cuts being a problem. The state legislature needs to hear that higher education is important to Californians and without your personal narratives they willnot understand the full impact of the budget cuts on students. Please voice your concerns. To find out where to send letters and how to help go here:
http://www.sfsu.edu/news/budgetcentral/students.html
And be aware that next year things will probably be worse.

Playing Outside
the Lines
Friday evening & Saturday, May
1–2, 2009
Children’s play—especially
outdoors in nature–has always been a vital part of growing up and
current research clearly shows that child initiated and self-directed
play is essential for our children’s overall physical, emotional and
academic development. Yet children’s play has declined and children have
moved from outdoors to indoors, from exploration and discovery to
screened entertainment and adult directed activities.
In this Friday evening talk and
Saturday experiential workshop, advocates will discuss the ins and outs
of play, especially in nature. Penny Wilson, David Hawkins, and Karen
Payne will introduce the art of supporting and restoring play in
neighborhoods, parks and schools, camps and afterschool programs–and
help rekindle our own love of playing in nature.
Presenters and Facilitators:

The opening
session of the Saturday workshop includes discussions about the nature
of play and types of play followed by an experiential outdoor play
experience. The afternoon session will focus on applying what has been
learned to our families, homes, schools and parks.
Hidden Villa’s beautiful natural

New
Office Hours and Advising Hours for Spring 09
This semester we will be changing our office hours. The CAD office will
no longer be open on Mondays, but instead will be open on Fridays. We
have made this change because of the lack of activity on Mondays and the
increase in complaints and requests that the office be open on Fridays.
This change will be implemented at the beginning of the Spring 09
semester, January 26th, 2009.
Again, the new CAD office hours are Tuesday – Friday, 9 am – 5 pm,
starting on January 26th, 2009. We will not be closed
during lunch. The office may be closed every once in a while during
these hours, but not for more than 20 minutes and a sign will always be
posted as to when someone will be back.
Also, we will be putting the sign up binder for Spring 09 advising
appointments outside the office, SCI 394, starting tomorrow, January 15th,
2009. To sign up for an appointment you need to come to the office; no
appointments will be made over the phone. Advising appointments will
also start on January 26th, 2009.

All CAD Majors!!!
Please consider signing up for these REC classes for the Spring semester. The Recreation, Parks and Tourism Department took special care to keep these classes, in the midst of budget cuts, because they know how important they are for CAD majors. Please take the time to read the below message from the Department Chair and consider the listed classes when registering for next semester.
CAD majors,
With all the budget craziness I wanted to inform you of the Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism spring schedule for classes that are part of the CAD program, and ask your assistance. I describe these now because the RPT dept has made a serious financial commitment to support the CAD program by keeping ALL previously scheduled classes available in spring. This was purposefully done to be a good partner with CAD. We do not have enough RPT majors to fill this many sections alone. We could have spent on money on other classes, believe me. Since we are not very involved in the advising of CAD students, I am asking for your cooperation in helping us fill these classes by informing/advising your students they are available in spring and are valuable to take. I'd appreciate your help.

Supporting choices for quality public education in San Francisco!
The SFCSI started with a group of parents and educators exploring the
options for progressive education in San Francisco. This dedicated group
conceived the idea of bringing a publicly funded charter school
emphasizing holistic education to San Francisco. Since its inception,
the SFCSI has grown with many more enthusiastic parents, credentialed
teachers and other supporters who advocate choice in the public school
system and a belief that school should be a place to learn, grow and
create: A place to explore the arts and the natural environment, a
community where children's developmental needs are respected and their
natural desire to learn is embraced. If this sounds like your idea
of what a school should be, we invite you to get involved with the San
Francisco Charter School Initiative (SFCSI).
We plan to open in Fall 2009 with a K-3 program including the
possibility of a Spanish enrichment kindergarten and a home school
resources center for students in grades K-6. HELP create something
