Frequently Asked Questions

1.    How often should I see an advisor?
We recommend once a semester to ensure steady progress through the major.

2.    Which advisor should I see?
The CAD department does not assign students to a specific advisor.  You may sign up for an advisor whose schedule matches your availability or an advisor who specializes in your concentration.

3.    When is the best time to see an advisor?
Any time you need guidance regarding courses in the major, your progress in the major, your grades, your career plans, or graduate school.  The most available time to get an appointment is during the middle of the semester.  The busiest times (and therefore the most difficult to get an appointment) are at the beginning and end of the semester after the new schedule of classes has come out.

4.    What if I have questions about General Education (G.E.) or other SF State graduation requirements?
We highly recommend scheduling an appointment to meet with an advisor at the Student Resource Center or Undergraduate Advising Center.

5.    Can I meet with a CAD Faculty Advisor if I am interested in becoming a CAD major?
We highly recommend meeting with an advisor from the Student Resource Center. Due to the number of students in the major, CAD faculty advisors are only available to meet with students accepted into the major.

6.    How do I know which courses to take for my major?
You can view your Degree Progress Report or use our CAD Major Planning Worksheets listed above. Please be sure to select the document for your specific CAD concentration and bulletin year. If you do not know your concentration or bulletin year, you can view it on your Degree Progress Report.

7.    What should I prepare for my advising appointment?

·         List of questions

·         Copy of your advising worksheet

·         Note taking materials

·         Unofficial transcripts if you have courses or credits that are not populating on your Degree Progress Report (DPR). Examples include AP credits, military credits, and college courses.

8.    Can I substitute courses in the major?

Only with permission from the Department. Please complete and turn in the CAD Course Substitution Petition Form.

9.    Can I change my concentration?
Only with permission from the Department. Please schedule an advising appointment with a CAD Faculty Advisor to discuss changing your CAD concentration.
