Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Visit our Major Planning Worksheets & Resources webpage and click on your specific CAD major.

The Registrar's Office has created a self-guiding page to assist you in submitting online requests to change your Major or Minor. Visit the Registrar’s Website.

The CAD department does not assign students to a specific advisor.  You may sign up for an advisor whose schedule matches your availability or an advisor who specializes in your concentration or interests.

Majors = Visit our Major Planning Worksheets & Resources webpage and click on your specific CAD major.

Minor = Visit our Minor in Early Childhood Development webpage.

You can view the top of your Degree Progress Report (DPR) to see your specific bulletin year for your CAD major requirements. On your Degree Progress Report, the “Requirement (Catalog) Term” refers to your bulletin year.

This could be correct because students have different bulletin years. Bulletin years determine the specific CAD major requirements a student has. Students can request to be moved to a future bulletin year – but they cannot request to an earlier bulletin year than what they currently have.

We recommend meeting with a CAD faculty advisor before you start your junior year and at least once a year until you graduate. Meeting with an advisor once a semester can help ensure steady progress through the major.

Any time you need guidance regarding courses in the major, your progress in the major, your grades, your career plans, or graduate school.

The most available time to get an appointment is during the middle of the semester.  The busiest times (and therefore the most difficult to get an appointment) are at the beginning and end of the semester - after the new schedule of classes has come out.

We highly recommend scheduling an appointment to meet with an advisor at the Undergraduate Advising Center.

Please join Drop-In Advising Hours (see Advising Services section above for details). You are also welcome to email your questions to cad@sfsu.edu.

If you want an individual 20-30 minute advising meeting, we highly recommend meeting with an advisor from the Undergraduate Advising Center (UAC). Due to the number of students in the major, CAD faculty advisors are only available to meet individually with students accepted into the major.

  • Note taking materials
  • Review your Degree Progress Report and the resources on our Academics & Admissions webpage
  • Unofficial transcripts if you have courses or credits that are not populating on your Degree Progress Report (DPR). Examples include AP credits, military credits and college courses.
  • Confirmation of your advising appointment and how to join the advising appointment (e.g., Zoom link)

Only with permission from the CAD Department Chair. Please email cad@sfsu.edu to start the consultation process. You may be requested to schedule an appointment to meet with the CAD Department Chair.

Yes, you can change your concentration. If you have 90+ units completed, you may be requested to meet with a CAD Faculty Advisor to discuss if changing your concentration may delay graduation.
The Registrar's Office has created a self-guiding page to assist you in submitting online requests to change your Major or Minor. Visit the Registrar’s Website.

Yes. You can take CAD 410GW to fulfill your CAD 410 requirement. The Degree Progress Report should be updated by Fall 2023 to reflect that students can take CAD 410GW to fulfill their CAD 410 requirement.

Starting in Fall 2023, CAD 410 is offered as CAD 410GW. CAD majors only need to complete one GWAR course for their major requirements:

  • CAD 410 + CAD 500GW; OR
  • CAD 410GW + CAD 500
