Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. Can I change my major to one of the new CAD concentration titles?
Yes! Current CAD majors are welcome to pursue the new CAD 2022-2023 bulletin requirements/change to one of the new concentrations. If you want to change your major to one of the new concentration titles, you will need to request so on your Student Center (Change of Major or Minor Guide).

  2. Do I have to change to one of the new CAD concentration titles?
No - you can keep your current CAD concentration title (Early Childhood, School Age Child & Family, or Youth Work & Out of School Time).

  3. Do I have to follow the new course requirements or can I continue with my current CAD major requirements?
You have the right to continue to follow your current CAD concentration bulletin year requirements (see your Degree Progress Report).
If you want to change your major so you have one of the new concentration titles, you will need to follow the course requirements for the 2022-2023 bulletin year. Please note, if you change your major to one of the 2022-2023 CAD majors and you’ve already completed CAD 450, you can request a course substitution so it can still count towards your major.

  4. Can I add the Early Childhood Development Minor?
It depends on your major. If you have a CAD concentration in Early Childhood (or the new: Early Care & Education), you cannot add the Early Childhood Development minor because of how much it overlaps with your concentration requirements. If you have one of the following CAD major concentrations (or any other SF State major) you are able to add the Early Childhood Development Minor:

    1. School Age Child & Family
    2. Youth Work & Out of School Time
    3. Elementary Education Teaching Pre-Credential (New)
    4. Community, Health, & Social Science (New)

If you want to add the minor, you will need to request so on your Student Center (Change of Major or Minor Guide).

  5. I want to teach Kindergarten or Transitional Kindergarten (TK), which CAD concentration should I be in?
If you want to be a public general education Kindergarten or Transitional Kindergarten (TK) school teacher, we recommend declaring the CAD Elementary Education Teaching Pre-Credential concentration and the minor in Early Childhood Development.
If you want to obtain the Early Childhood Special Education Credential (ECSE), to be able to work with young children with disabilities from birth through kindergarten, we recommend declaring the CAD Early Care & Education concentration.

We hope this information and the video above are helpful! Please email us at cad@sfsu.edu if you have any questions or concerns.
